August 2026

September marks the start of another monthly recap. High summer brought another e-commerce slowdown, the kind that shows up every year as consumers spend more time outside and less time shopping online.

August followed the same seasonal pattern, but the year-on-year numbers underneath tell a steadier story.

Revenue Growth Slows Month-on-Month, Holds Steady Year-on-Year

August revenue stalled on a month-on-month basis, dipping slightly versus July 2026. Seen year-on-year, the picture looks different: global e-commerce revenue grew 7.2%, reaching US$427.9 billion in August 2026.

The two measures capture different things. Month-on-month growth reflects the seasonal dip that shows up every summer, when outdoor time competes directly with screen time. Year-on-year growth strips that seasonality out and shows the underlying trend, and that trend remains solidly positive.

The US Leads Regional Growth, China Lags Behind

The United States led year-on-year growth once again, at +10.2%, far ahead of Germany (+8.9%) and the UK (+6.4%). China stands out for the opposite reason: its +3.8% increase from August 2025 to August 2026 is the slowest pace among the major markets covered here.

Leading Summer Categories

Hobby & Leisure, DIY, and Furniture & Homeware share a common thread: they fit naturally into how people spend a slow e-commerce summer.

Hobby & Leisure purchases often follow outdoor activity rather than compete with it, gear bought ahead of a trip or a pastime picked up over the break. DIY and Furniture & Homeware purchases cluster around home projects that pick up once summer travel winds down, giving both categories a growth rate that holds up even as overall e-commerce cools.

VISA and Mastercard Lead Payment Adoption

Visa remains the most widely offered payment method this month, at 77.8% of store adoption, with Mastercard close behind at 77.6%. Amex trails both by a wide margin, at 57.2%.
